ATTRIBUTED TO ADRIAEN VAN DIEST (C.1655-1704)

Buckingham House

c. 1703-10

RCIN 404350

This painting was commissioned by the Duke of Buckingham to show his newly built residence, Buckingham House, and its gardens, from Constitution Hill. It shows the first phase of work completed on the garden by William Talman, with terracing leading down to the 550 metre-long canal on the right. Further features added later by Henry Wise, such as a double row of limes flanking the canal, do not appear in Van Diest’s painting.
