This sheet is laid out in a similar manner to Leonardo’s anatomical illustrations with accompanying notes which describe the physical attributes and growth habits of the two rushes. Investigative sheets such as this one may have been intended to contribute to a botanical treatise by Leonardo. However such a project remained unfulfilled at the time of the artist’s death in 1519.
