LEONARD KNYFF (1650-1722)

A View of Hampton Court

c. 1702-14

RCIN 404760

This panoramic view shows in astonishing detail the gardens laid out by William III at Hampton Court Palace. The Great Parterre designed by Daniel Marot dominates the East front, where over two thousand lime trees fan out in a pattern of avenues known as a patte d’oie (goose foot). The new Privy Garden laid out in 1690 can be seen on the left. In the background on the right is the ‘Wilderness’, containing the famous hedge maze which still survives today.
