WORKSHOP OF MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN (1647-1717)

White-Throated Toucan

c.1705?

RCIN 921238

The unnatural pose of this toucan suggests that the drawing was based on a preserved specimen rather than a live bird, and it is probably by one of Merian’s daughters rather than Merian herself. The White-Throated Toucan (Ramphastos tucanus) is found in the Amazon basin, but was well-known in Europe at the time.
