Two Apples with Gypsy Moth

c.1705?

RCIN 921230

The caterpillar of the Gypsy Moth (Lymantria dispar dispar) feeds on the leaves of deciduous trees, including apple. Merian has chosen to show the life cycle of the moth in a row beneath two apples. An unidentified collector’s inscription on the reverse is visible through the vellum at bottom centre.
