Royal Relatives

Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, and Prince Charles and Princess Anne were not the only royal children to be photographed by Marcus Adams. Other royal children, both British and European, visited The Children’s Studio – among them Prince William of Gloucester, Prince Edward and Princess Alexandra of Kent, the Infantas Beatriz and Maria Cristina of Spain and Prince Nikola of Yugoslavia. Many of their portraits were widely reproduced, gracing the front covers of such periodicals as Weekly Illustrated, The Tatler and Woman’s Own.

The Bowes-Lyon family also visited The Children’s Studio. The children, Nancy (1918–59) and Timothy (1918–72), were twins and photographed by Marcus Adams in 1924. Their father Patrick, Lord Glamis, was the eldest brother of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. In 1944 he succeeded as 15th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and Timothy himself succeeded as 16th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne on his father’s death in 1949.
