LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)

Recto: Studies of water, and a seated old man. Verso: Architectural studies

c.1512-13

RCIN 912579

To the right, Leonardo studies the flow of water past fixed obstacles and the patterns of coiling eddies that result. The note reads ‘observe the motion of the surface of water, which resembles that of hair’. The old man to the left appears to be gazing at the water, but this is illusory, as the sheet was evidently folded when Leonardo made the drawings.
