LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)

A storm over a valley

c.1506-10

RCIN 912409

Leonardo journeyed high into the mountains beyond Milan, recording an ascent of Monte Rosa one summer during which he found snow on the summits and witnessed the darkening of blue sky at high altitudes. But this drawing of a storm in an Alpine valley, with sunlit peaks above the clouds, must have been done from memory or imagination, rather than on the spot.
