LEONARDO DA VINCI (VINCI 1452-AMBOISE 1519)

A standing male nude

c.1504-6

RCIN 912596

At the time of his work towards the Battle of Anghiari, Leonardo returned to the study of human anatomy, to allow him to paint the monumental figures in the mural with complete confidence. Here the model spreads his legs evenly to balance his weight distribution – Leonardo wanted to understand the form of the muscles when relaxed as well as tensed.
