Studies of horses

Leonardo’s earliest substantial group of drawings are studies towards a composition of the Adoration of the Shepherds. No painting resulted, but a couple of years later he began work on an altarpiece of the Adoration of the Magi, which remained unfinished when he left Florence. The bucolic atmosphere of the earlier studies became more agitated, and the Adoration of the Magi has an otherworldly aspect unprecedented in Florentine art.
