Formalised uniforms for soldiers became more common during the seventeenth century, but there was no set uniform for officers until John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, specified in 1702 that officers commanding troops for the upcoming military campaigns against France should “be all clothed in red, plain and uniform” – as he is shown here. The colour red remains associated with the British army to this day.
