ADRIAEN HANNEMAN (1604-71)

Mary, Princess of Orange (1631-1660)

1655?

RCIN 405877

Princess Mary is dressed for a court masquerade, possibly that held in the Hague in 1655 where she was described as “very well dressed, like an Amazon”. Feathered cloaks of this type were worn by the Tupinambá people of sixteenth-and-seventeenth-century Brazil and imported into Europe, where they were appreciated for both their cultural context and technical craftsmanship.
