ATTRIBUTED TO JOHANN CHRISTIAN NEUBER (1736-1808)

Snuff box

about 1765

RCIN 9357

Circular quatre-couleur gold and red enamel hinged box. Mounted with oval moss agate plaques and coloured gold floral trails.

Although there is no visible signature on this box, it is almost identical in design to an oval snuff box and a carnet de bal, both signed by Neuber and amongst some of his earliest works from the 1760s. Both the snuff box and carnet de bal are in private collections, but can be seen in 'Gold, Jasper and Carnelian, Johann Christian Neuber at the Saxon Court', A. Kugel, London 2012, p.124.

Catalogue entry from "Gold", London, 2014.
