Balmoral Tableaux-Vivants: 'A Scrap of Paper'

24 Oct 1893

RCIN 2980042

In addition to tableaux, some twelve plays were performed at Queen Victoria’s residences in 1893. One of these was A Scrap of Paper by the French playwright Victorien Sardou (1831–1908), adapted by John Palgrave Simpson (1807–87). The play featured Princesses Beatrice, Aribert of Anhalt and senior members of the queen’s household. The photograph shows the equerry Major Henry Charles Legge (1852–1924) playing the part of a naturalist called Brisemouche, who holds a large net with butterflies attached to his hat.
