Queen Victoria’s Military Tunic and hat

As the first female sovereign since the 18th century, Queen Victoria required a military uniform in her role as Head of the Armed Forces. Two of Queen Victoria’s military tunics survive. This tunic is based on masculine uniform but is feminised through the softened shoulder line and exaggerated waist and peplum, which also facilitated riding side-saddle. The wool felt hat has an upturned brim and is trimmed with dyed feathers.
