State Visit to France, 1972

Worn during a State Visit to France, May 1972 and on subsequent occasions for the State Opening of Parliament. Hartnell’s stately coat is a tour de force of rich embroidery in a stylised floral design. The sleeveless shift dress beneath has a concentration of embroidery around the lower, most visible part of the skirt.
