WILLEM VAN DE VELDE THE YOUNGER (1633-1707)

A Calm : A States Yacht, A Barge and many other Vessels under Sail

Signed and dated 1659

RCIN 407275

Silence and stillness reign in this smoothly-painted naval parade. To counter this, the artist includes a bargeman in livery blowing a ceremonial trumpet, shattering the peace, while making the viewer aware of the subtle noise of creaking sails and lapping waves which would accompany a real-life encounter with these impressive vessels. Acquired by George IV in 1814 No. 24
