This portrait shows Princess Beatrice in the clothes worn at the Thanksgiving Service for the recovery of the Prince of Wales from typhoid fever, which was held at St Paul's Cathedral on 27 February 1872. Her costume was described in the press as 'a dress and jacket of rich mauve silk, trimmed with swan's down, and a white hat trimmed with mauve and white feathers.' Queen Victoria commented that 'Beatrice looked very nice.'
