GUIDO RENI (BOLOGNA 1575-BOLOGNA 1642)

The head of a woman

c.1626

RCIN 903196

The musician Nicholas Lanier (1588–1666) compiled a significant collection of drawings which he stamped with small stars. A number of these seem to have passed directly into Charles II's collection. It is possible that Lanier acquired the present drawing directly from Guido Reni's studio in Bologna, in 1626, when he was buying a painting from the artist for Charles I.

Cat. 153
  • stamp, eight-pointed star with hole at centre: Lugt 2885 (Nicholas Lanier)
