Pallas Athena is the Ancient Greek goddess of wisdom and warfare, and patron of Athens. This was among 24 paintings acquired from the collection of two Amsterdam merchants, Gerard and Jan Reynst and presented to Charles II at the Banqueting House as part of the Dutch Gift. By 1666 it was hanging in the King's Closet at Whitehall. Presented to Charles II by the States of Holland and West Friesland, 1660. Ex. cat
