ARNOLD VAN WESTERHOUT (1651-1725)

James II

1685

RCIN 602839

Following the death of Charles II on 6 February 1685, the crown passed to his Catholic younger brother, who became James VII and II. Much effort had been expended by Protestant factions to prevent James from inheriting the throne, but Charles II had staunchly defended his brother's right to succeed him. This print, produced in Rome, expresses the hope that James would return Britain to the Catholic faith.
