George Brooke, 9th Baron Cobham, was a prominent courtier and soldier during the reign of Henry VIII, and elevated to the Order of the Garter by Edward VI. Like that of the Countess of Surrey, this drawing adopts an arresting frontal pose that is unusual in the work of Holbein, who generally favoured the three-quarter view.
