Flatman miniatures

These miniatures are thought to depict two of Charles II's most important ministers in Scotland. Lauderdale held the offices of Secretary of State for Scotland and Lord Commissioner, and was instrumental in the rebuilding of the Palace of Holyroodhouse between 1671 and 1679. His political ally, Argyll, was Master of the King's Household in Scotland, an office that is the hereditary right of the Earls of Argyll. In 1685 he supported the Duke of Monmouth's unsuccessful rebellion against James VII and II and was executed for treason.
