Charles II’s cousin Prince Rupert introduced the printmaking technique of mezzotint to England, demonstrating it at the Royal Society in 1661. John Evelyn subsequently obtained permission from Rupert to discuss mezzotint in Sculptura, his treatise on printmaking. Included in that book was the first mezzotint to be published in England, Prince Rupert’s so-called Little Executioner, a detail of a composition depicting the execution of St John the Baptist.
