WENCESLAUS HOLLAR (1607-77)

James, Duke of York in exile

1651

RCIN 803447

James, Duke of York (later James II), was the younger brother of Charles II. He fled into exile towards the end of the Civil War, spending time in France and the Low Countries and eventually securing a position as a cavalry commander in the French army. Hollar's etching of James at the age of 18 emphasises his royal status, particularly through the prominent placement of his Garter star.
