PHILIP JEAN (1755-1802)

Paul Sandby (1731-1809)

Signed and dated 1787

RCIN 422520

This newly-acquired miniature is a portrait of Paul Sandby at the age of fifty-six. He is shown with drawing equipment that alludes to his fame as a landscape artist: a sketchbook showing the outline of a tree, and a porte-crayon, used for holding pieces of chalk. Windsor Castle, the site with which he was most closely associated, is seen in the background.
