CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Murano: San Giovanni Battista dei Battuti

c.1735-40

RCIN 907458

The view is from the island of Murano, a kilometre north of Venice, looking south-west towards the city. The church of San Giovanni Battista dei Battuti (‘of the Metalbeaters’) was demolished in 1833, and replaced by the glass factories and lighthouse that occupy the site today. Along the horizon is the skyline of Venice, the tower of San Francesco della Vigna prominent to the left, the Campanile of San Marco and the dome of Santi Giovanni e Paolo at the centre.
