FRANCIS BEDFORD (1815-94)

Water carriers at Durazzo [Durres, Albania]

22 Feb 1862

RCIN 2700852

Although Bedford was known primarily as a skilled landscape photographer, he was clearly highly adept at identifying and capturing striking group portraits. He took very few such photographs on the royal tour, but he made two in Durrës. These water carriers would have filled large jars, seen in the photograph, with drinking water for the Prince of Wales and his companions. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
