FRANCIS BEDFORD (1815-94)

The Propylon and portico of the Temple of Medeenet Abou [Medinet Habu, Thebes]

18 Mar 1862

RCIN 2700897

There are piles of stones and fallen masonry in front of the gateway and the earth still sits high above the original ground level of the temple floor. The excavation of this temple began in 1859, only three years before the Prince’s visit. It usually took decades to explore the ruined structures completely. As a result, photographs often provide highly valuable records of the different stages of the excavations. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
