In the Mediterranean, the Royal Yacht was escorted by other British ships. HMS Magicienne was under the command of Ernst, fourth Prince of Leiningen, the son of Queen Victoria’s half-brother Carl. Ernst had joined the royal party onshore in Constantinople. The frigate HMS Doris was commanded by Sir Leopold McClintock, the renowned Arctic explorer. Acquired by the Prince of Wales by the late nineteenth century
