Banias is on the site of the ancient city of Caesarea Philippi. It was associated with the Greek god Pan, to whom there was a cave dedicated. During the Crusader era, the city was the site of much conflict. The Prince wrote in his journal that it ‘was the highest place north of Palestine which our Lord visited, and the Holy Land therefore ends there.’ Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
