The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh at Balmoral, 1971 1971

RCIN 2999864

Taken just after a barbecue lunch at Balmoral, this backlit double portrait was widely distributed, and was used in Australia for the Silver Jubilee stamps.

The photographer, the Earl of Lichfield, was the grandson of Queen Elizabeth’s brother Jock, and thus The Queen’s first cousin once removed. He took a number of informal photographs of the Royal Family while staying at Balmoral, as well as the Christmas family group at the end of the same year, and a number of photographs on the Far Eastern tour at the beginning of the following year.
