Princess Elizabeth joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service early in 1945, when she was registered as No. 230873 Second Subaltern Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. The Princess trained at Aldershot, where she undertook a driving and vehicle maintenance course, qualifying on 14 April. On 27 July 1945 she was promoted to Junior Commander. The Princess is pictured in her dungarees, hard at work changing a wheel.
