ALEXANDER MARSHAL (C. 1620-82)

Common sunflower and greyhound

c. 1650-82

RCIN 924404

The sunflower is native to the Americas and was brought to England in the sixteenth century. The creatures which Marshal often drew on the same sheets as his plant studies are usually out of scale, and seem to be included as light-hearted additions to the florilegium.
