MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN (1647-1717)

Cassava root with Garden Tree Boa, Sphinx Moth and Treehopper

1702-03

RCIN 921159

A characteristic of Merian’s work is her fondness for extravagant curves and coils. Here the moth’s proboscis curls improbably, and the out-of-scale snake (which Merian admitted to have added only to complete the composition) arranges its tail in a similarly decorative manner.
