Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717)
Branch of Banana with Bullseye Moth 1702-03
RCIN 921166
The banana tree is not indigenous to the Americas, but was introduced by the Spanish from south-east Asia and cultivated for its fruit. Merian commented: ‘it is used like an apple, and has a pleasant flavour like apples in Holland; it is good both cooked and raw’.
