Juan Pantoja de la Cruz was the foremost Spanish portrait painter of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century. His portraits were concerned more with the portrayal of solemn and imposing majesty than the reproduction of an individual likeness. The queen holds a Book of Hours, demonstrating her commitment to her Catholic faith.
