QUEEN CHARLOTTE

Letter from Queen Charlotte to George, Prince of Wales

April 1795

The Royal Archives contain more than 300 letters from Queen Charlotte to her eldest (and most likely favourite) child, George, Prince of Wales, later Prince Regent and eventually King George IV. The letters cover a range of subjects from motherly advice to general comments on current affairs.

In this affectionate letter, written in April 1795, Queen Charlotte writes to her son in order to send a gift. Her letter refers to a bout of unseasonably pleasant weather for April, noting that ‘it is even warmer than it was yesterday’, and expresses her concern for both the prince and for her daughter-in-law, Princess Caroline, who was pregnant at the time. Queen Charlotte considerately encloses a papier-mâché fan as a gift for Princess Caroline, noting that ‘it’s curiosity is it’s real beauty’. This is a warm and conversational family letter, providing an insight into the close relationship between mother and son.
