This photograph by the Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson from around 1859 show two gardeners mowing the expansive lawn using a horse-drawn lawnmower. Prince Albert was a keen adopter of new inventions such as the lawnmower, with one of the first models being used at Buckingham Palace. Described as a rotary cutter drawn by a pony, it could have been similar to the type being used here.
