Some Christmas gifts reflected royal engagements undertaken during the past year. In September 1846 Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their two eldest children, toured the Channel Islands and Cornish coast on the royal yacht Victoria and Albert. The Queen was struck by the beauty of the sea that day, and the ‘quantities of Cornish Pilchard Fishermen, in their curious large boats, which kept going round & round'.
