Prince Albert died on 14 December 1861, when Louise was only 13 years old. The Queen was heartbroken and encouraged Louise and her siblings to adhere to a strict mourning routine and to remember their father in many aspects of their lives. The effect of her father’s death can be seen in many of Louise’s drawings of the time, such as in this watercolour of a sleeping figure, who is probably Queen Victoria dreaming of a reunion with her late husband. Louise and her siblings often drew pictures for their parents on important occasions; this watercolour is dated 10 February 1862, which was the Queen’s first wedding anniversary since Albert’s death.
