NEPALESE

Votive plaque

19th century

RCIN 69683

A Nepalese votive plaque depicting the Hindu god Vishnu seated on the legendary bird Garuda. They are housed within a shrine perched on three stylised mountains and flanked by two Immortals, with two asparas (flying bodhisattva) above. Both the central design and the floral and foliate border are comprised of dense filigree work set with hundreds of semi-precious stones, including turquoise, coral, tourmaline or lapis and rock crystal.  Mounted in a copper frame, with a punched inscription on the reverse hammered sheet.

Plaque of this kind served as portable shrines for domestic and personal temple use. Many were supplied with hoops for hanging within the home.
