The Angel opening Christ's tomb c. 1670-1700
Pen and brown ink with brown, grey and pinkwash | 46.3 x 32.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 906518
This dramatic drawing by the Dutch artist Lambert Doomer, shows an angel lifting open the lid of Christ’s tomb on Easter morning. The soldiers who were guarding the tomb topple backwards in surprise, and the drawing is lit dramatically by heavenly light, which forcefully breaks through the cloudy night and gleams off the soldiers’ weapons and armour. The drawing is a copy after a painting by Rembrandt van Rijn. Doomer was likely one of his many pupils.
