Queen Mary’s first trip to France during the First World War was in July 1917. She visited hospitals, aerodromes, nurses’s hostels and casualty-clearing stations. At home in Britain, King George V and Queen Mary undertook similar visits to wounded and disabled soldiers, sailors and airmen in hospitals and convalescent centres. Discharged soldiers and sailors were invited to entertainments at Buckingham Palace.
