SIR GILBERT DETHICK (1499/1500-1584)

The Dethick Garter Book

1551-58

RCIN 1047416

The Order of the Garter features in a number of Shakespeare’s plays. This manuscript covers the reigns of Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I, a period of great religious unrest which is reflected in the appointments to the Order. It was made by Sir Gilbert Dethick, who first entered the College of Arms at the age of 16. He held the off ice of Norroy King of Arms (Norroy indicating the area north of the River Trent) under Henry VIII and Edward VI, and was appointed Garter King of Arms in 1550.
