Princess Alice gave this watercolour depicting the maddened Ophelia to Queen Victoria for her birthday on 24 May 1859. Alice was one of the most artistically gifted of Queen Victoria’s children. Like her parents and siblings she often took inspiration for her compositions from plays of Shakespeare she had recently seen or read.
