LOUIS HAGHE (1806-1885)

A performance of Macbeth in the Rubens Room, Windsor Castle, 4 February 1853.

dated 1853

RCIN 919794

The Windsor Theatricals were first presented by Charles Kean and company at Windsor Castle, in a temporary theatre in the Rubens Room (now part of the Visitor Route and known as the King’s Drawing Room). This watercolour of Charles Kean’s company performing Macbeth at Windsor gives an excellent idea of the intimacy of these occasions. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert are seated on the left, with the royal children on the floor before them. On the stage, Mrs Charles Kean is seen as Lady Macbeth, in the sleepwalking scene from Act V.The Queen was delighted with the play.
