SIR DAVID WILKIE (1785-1841)

Prince Charles of Leiningen (1804-1856)

c.1824-30

RCIN 402415

This oil sketch relates to the figure of Charles, Prince of Leiningen, in Wilkie’s Queen Adelaide with Princess Victoria and Members of Her Family. The Prince, half-brother to Queen Victoria, was the only son of Victoria, Duchess of Kent by her first marriage to Emich Charles, 2nd Prince of Leiningen. The remarkable liveliness of this sketch is reminiscent of the work of Sir Thomas Lawrence. Presented by the artist’s sister after his death to Victoria, Duchess of Kent; given by her to Queen Victoria.
