REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (LEIDEN 1606-AMSTERDAM 1669)

A Rabbi with a Cap

RCIN 405519

Though signed by Rembrandt, this work was thought to be by an imitator until its free handling was recently recognised as the work of the master. Expressive heads of this kind were called tronies in the seventeenth century and were collected as character studies and painterly exercises. Acquired by George III as part of the Consul Smith Collection in 1762
