Neglected as a residence, Windsor Castle seems to have been treated as a historic display. Then as now, the King's Closet provides walls for a dense picture hang. Northern Renaissance works predominate with Reymerswaele's famous Misers (RCIN 405707) to the left opposite Holbein's Duke of Norfolk (RCIN 404439). They thought of the painting immediately over the fireplace as a disappointing Van Mieris; we think it's a brilliant Vermeer (cat. 27).
